How to Deal with Exercise Boredom

I’ve been avoiding talking about this for a while…

Mostly because I don’t know how to say it properly

But here goes

I actually find 90% of exercises REALLY boring

Most people don’t believe me because I’m in the fitness industry– so that must mean I absolutely LOVE exercise right?

This pretty much sums it up

I just happen to love very niche and specific kinds of movement.

It’s normal to find exercise boring and tiresome. Don’t worry if you feel this way.

At the same time, it’s still possible to be active and stay moving.

Let’s dive into some principles shall we?

1. If it excites you, ride that wave

If boredom is what’s keeping you from moving, you’re going to have to find something inspiring for you.

I suspect this is why running a marathon is on so many people’s “fitness bucket list.”

It’s a clean, inspiring, brag-worthy goal.

And people love the idea of running one.

I’ve had friends who are complete couch potatoes go from zero to marathon ready, just because they were so in love with the idea of having run one!

You have to pick something that makes you buzz with eagerness.

2. Find and Own Programs for Life

My fitness goals are always skill based.

I’ve tried to learn a handstandget comfortable on the ground, or lift really heavy weights.

Each time, I get recommendations and a program for each of those goals.

I’ll buy it, and digest it as deeply as I can — BUT I also expect I won’t make progress all at once.

That’s why I prefer programs that I can own forever.

It takes the pressure off to get good too fast. Instead I can take my time and learn it bit by bit

Which leads me to my next point..

3. Play with 5-week sprints

I’ve found that this is the perfect amount of time for me to get excited, learn something meaningful, and expect things to wane at about Week 4 or Week 5.

And that’s okay–

The goal isn’t to be super strong in 5 weeks.

The goal is to be active regularly, throughout the years.

That means, the program you’re doing is less important than actually doing something (anything!)

4. Cycle programs in and out

As time goes on, and you find more and more programs that you enjoy doing, you can easily swap them out every now and then.

Again, the important thing is that you’re doing something and staying active.

Having a curated set of fun and inspiring programs can keep you moving.

Even when things are boring.
